How to Avoid Slow Stages & Recession-Proof Your Online Business

How can you avoid slow stages in business?

And how can you recession-proof your business?

Is it even possible?!

The honest answer is.... no.

That wasn't what you were expecting, right?

Here's the truth: all parts of life ebb and flow, up and down, and business is no exception to that. You can't avoid the lows. What makes you a successful business owner isn't that you avoid the lows, it's how you deal with them when they happen and how you prepare for them.

Tough times don't last forever, and that means good times don't last forever either. The sooner we accept that fact of life, the less stressed we are, because we can then drop the unrealistic expectation that growth is linear and that our businesses are failing if they are not always on an upward trajectory.

I hope this doesn’t seem like I’m being a Debbie Downer, but I’d rather be honest and realistic than dishonest because I know that “5 ways to recession proof your business” would be a hot topic that sells courses and gets lots of views.

Although this may not be the answer you were hoping for, there is FREEDOM in embracing this truth. And even though you can’t avoid slow stages or recession proof your business, you can prepare for them so that your business doesn’t break down when they happen.

In this episode, you'll learn...

  • 4 ways to prepare for slow seasons and recessions so they don't overly hurt your business or impact your lifestyle

  • Why you need to build a brand, not just a business

  • How your purpose, values, services and pricing can create a community that is loyal to your business even during hard times

  • Why living "below your means" is the key to inner peace during slow seasons (and the key to much more.)

We live in a world that constantly pushes us to want more. Do more. Be better.  Be the best.

As members of the online business space, we're faced with content on a daily basis about hustling harder, building an empire, making millions, and leaving a legacy.

But we get to decide if we even WANT to build an empire.

Or if a simple lifestyle business that revolves around our ideal, slow, free lifestyle is enough for us.

Don't build an online empire or hustle and grind all the time because it's what you think you "should" do to build a successful business or look like a success or feel financially secure. Owning a business empire and being a leader in your field is not the only definition of success and not the only way to make excellent money online.

What is an empire business and what is a lifestyle business?

Empire: a business that outlasts you. It normally has a large team of employees. A CEO. Hundreds of thousands of followers. A legacy it wants to leave on the world.

Lifestyle: a simple business that revolves around your ideal lifestyle. It's normally just you and a couple of subcontractors. You make around the 60k - 250k mark. It's never more important than your lifestyle is to you. Whereas with an empire business, the empire is often just as important to you.

I want to be clear:

There’s nothing wrong with building an empire business if that's what you want to do.  There's nothing wrong with either business model.

The problem? The empire business is often the one the world wants us to opt in to. And if we don't, we usually are met with entrepreneurs telling us that it's probably because we're thinking too small about what's possible for us. And they could be right - in some people's instances, that's probably true. But not all.

I remember going for dinner with one entrepreneur who told me about a podcast she follows by someone who has made 18 million in a year from her online coaching business. We discussed money and I told her I don't want to make millions. She looked at me, shocked, and said "but if you can, why not? Wouldn't it be cool to say you've made a million?"

And maybe she's right. It IS possible so... why not?

Here's why: I know it's possible but I don't care enough about making millions to put in the work to make it a reality. And I don't want to run an empire. It doesn’t appeal to me.

And that's fine.

It doesn't mean I have limiting beliefs stopping me or that I'm thinking too small. I know I COULD do that. But I don't WANT to. And that's the difference. Maybe I will want it one day. But not today.

It's at this point that some entrepreneurs think you don't want to because you have mindsets in the way. Negative beliefs about money making you greedy or materialistic.

That's not it for me. And maybe that isn’t it for you either.

If you have those kinds of beliefs, you'd struggle to get to 50k a year, let alone millions. I'm not an advocate for people clinging to limiting money beliefs like “money is the root of all evil”. Or “having money makes you greedy.” I don't believe those things. Money can be good because money is freedom. Freedom from financial worry and freedom to do the things you enjoy and dream of. Freedom for your family and your future.

But it isn't everything. And... after reaching the financial security you need to live your dream lifestyle, it's OK if money then is no longer one of your highest values or drivers.

I think that's actually a good thing.

I think that constantly chasing after more, bigger and better when you've reached what you wanted can be a sign that we don't know how to be satisfied with what we have. That we don't know how to settle in to the enoughness we've built. That we don't know what to do with ourselves if we're not always striving to have even more.

After reaching what you deem as financial security and abundance -  that would be the unique number you need per year to live your ideal lifestyle- what would happen if you could just relax into it?

What would happen if instead of always striving for more, we only did that when it felt aligned and exciting to do so?

What would it be like to reach what you deem as financial security in a gentle way? A way that involves effort, consistency and hard work but is NOT done through hustle, overwhelm and stress.

Hard work is not the same as hustle.

Working hard can be healthy and good for our self esteem and happiness.

Hustling is often when people take it too far and it becomes unhealthy.

I built a financially abundant business that enables me to live my desired lifestyle, and the years I earned the most money were the years I felt at ease in my business.

You can build a simple lifestyle business and still make an abundant amount of money.

I think one mindset mistake people do make is believing that a lifestyle business is a small business that doesn't make very much money. That just covers your bills. I think people often correlate simple business to mean a business that doesn't make much income.

But you can build a simple six figure business if that's the amount of money you need.

When I had my first six figure year, I was working 3-4 days a week and traveling and living my life.

I know from my own experience and the experience of peers who have made upwards of 500k, some making multi-millions, that your business strategies and needs start evolving around the 250-300k mark. Up until then, you can run a great, simple business with just a really good VA (or a part time employee if you want to keep the cost of hiring help down and don’t mind the responsibilities that come with employees.)

Up until that point, if you're an online service or digital product based business, you don't really need a big team or tens of thousands of followers. You don't need Facebook ads. You can keep things simple.

Don't confuse what is necessary to build a 7 figure business with what is necessary to build a six figure business.

And while on that note, it's probably not wise to learn from an empire owner about building a simple, gentle business that makes six figures or less if that's your goal. Because your values wouldn't be aligned. And the way you build a 7 figure business and the strategies and priorities you have there are not the same as building a six fig business.

So whatever income goal you set for yourself: be it 7 figures, 6 figures, or less... make sure you choose mentors to follow and invest in who share your values, who have built their businesses in the WAY you want to build yours. Because it isn't just the businesses income that determines whether it lasts for years and years, it's the WAY you run your business. If you don't enjoy the way you run it - you've learned how to run it the hustly way or a way that doesn't align with your values - you will eventually stop that business because your mental health will require you to.

How to avoid burnout as a business owner and still make an abundant income online

First, as we just discussed, you need to learn from business owners who have built their businesses in the way you want to build yours: sustainably and gently.

Second, as we discussed as well, you need to let go of any beliefs that are telling you that you can't earn as much as six figures while running a simple, gentle business and working 3-4 days a week. Like I said, if you think you need this ‘complicated’ business that involves ads and empire building and employees, you're thinking more of a million pound business and you don't need those things to make six figs. You can do it just you and a virtual assistant.

Third, you need to take care of yourself outside of your business if you want to avoid burnout and overwhelm. You will burn out so much faster if you are:

  • Taking your phone to bed with you each night

  • Waking up and going on your phone first thing in the morning

  • Checking emails first thing in the morning

  • Not having boundaries on the amount of time you spend on social media

  • Not taking care of your mental health

  • Not devoting some of your time to self care

I noticed that on the days when I spend lots of time on social media, it takes a huge hit on my productivity and makes me feel like crap. It even gives me headaches. And I start to feel burnout more easily.

Whereas when I tend to my self care, when I make time to rest and time to look after myself in my day to day life, I'm more productive and happier in my working hours.

Same goes for when I'm eating nutritional food 80% of the time and moving my body every day, going for walks, and drinking water. It's the simple things like this that we often neglect that push us closer to burnout because we're not filling our own cup so to speak before pouring into our clients, our marketing, and the other demands of our business.

Going away from how to avoid burnout as a business owner, and back to the idea of lifestyle business vs empire business...

I hope this episode has shown you that a business empire is not the only form of "successful" business you can build.

I hope it gives you the permission you don't even need to step away from building an empire business because you feel you "should" and only do so if that is what excites you.

I hope this episode has shown you that a lifestyle business is not a hobby business. It can make really good money.

If you want to learn more about how to do less and earn more so you can live more, there are three ways I can help you…

10 Mistakes That Are Keeping Your Income Below $5k a Month

  1. Not investing in business education and learning from entrepreneurs that are ahead of you (Podcast timestamp: 4:10 )

There are a lot of online business owners trying to reinvent the wheel in the name of saving money. This is what I did too when I first started my freelance design business. But it was a mistake because yes, it saved me the $500 - $8000 I could have invested in courses and coaching, but it took me 2-3 years to figure things out on my own. In those 2-3 years I earned less than £10k a year because I was teaching myself everything (which is slow and requires a lot of mistake-making before you find what works.)

Yes, we are all unique business owners and there’s no one-size-fits-all business structure or marketing strategy we can all follow for success. But it’s wise to pick and choose from other people’s proven structures instead of building the whole thing from scratch. If I had, maybe I would have earned £30k+ a year instead of less than £10k?

Would, let’s say, £5k in business education have been worth £30k in sales?

It’s a no-brainer - of course it would!

(This obviously depends on if you have the money to invest in your education. If you are struggling to pay the bills and put food on the table, it’s probably unwise to invest in your education right now. But you can look for a stable job that meets your financial needs and then work on your business.)

2. Constantly rebranding (9:26)

In my first few years as an online graphic designer, I was constantly rebranding. And it was a waste of time. Because honestly? There will never be a design that is 100% perfect because perfect doesn’t exist.

And if I’m being even more honest? Your clients don’t care if your logo or website isn’t perfect.

Just get it done and promise yourself that you won’t tweak it again for at least 6 months. Habitually rebranding is a form of procrastination that helps you avoid the scary work of actually marketing your services.

3. Relying solely on one risky marketing strategy (16:21)

Some marketing strategies are riskier than others, like referrals and social media marketing. Both are great! But if you rely solely on one of them for clients, it’s risky because you don’t control either strategy. Whether or not you get referrals is down to other people. And social media is controlled by an algorithm that can change at any time.

If you’ve relied on one marketing strategy and found it’s dried up and your income is endangered, take it as a lesson and learn to have 2-3 marketing strategies. At least one needs to be a safer strategy you have more control over, like email marketing.

4. Making a PDF your opt-in freebie instead of a free email course (19:41)

I have PDF’s and I also have free email courses. (A new one is coming out next month!)

I’ve had free email courses for a decade. And they convert far more clients and customers than my PDF’s. Plus, they help my subscribers get into the habit of opening my emails (whereas people often sign up for free PDF’s and then never open emails from that person again.)

Here are a few more reasons you might not be earning $5k a month…

24:09 You are charging what you’re worth, not what the result of your service is worth

26:41 You give up on marketing strategies too quickly

29:07 You rely on motivation or passion to fuel your work

30:59 You send 1 email a month or don’t have an email list at all

33:24 You work full-time hours. (Listen to the podcast episode for why this reason made the list!)

37:43 You don’t have a niche or clear messaging

40:00 You kinda just hope clients roll in without putting effort into marketing

I go in-depth on each of these points in the podcast episode. Hit “play” on the player below or listen to this episode on Apple or Spotify!

How I Built a Six Figure Business Working On It Just 3 Days a Week (& Traveling the World)

This is not an overnight success story.

This is not an “I made six figures in my first six months!” story.

It’s not an “I reached 100k followers in 1 year” story either.

Real talk?

In my first few years, I barely made £10k.

(I could have made more in those first few years and I’ll discuss the mistakes I made so you don’t have to make them in an upcoming episode! Subscribe so you don’t miss it.)

Here’s what my business income progression has looked like over the last decade:

I hope this graph normalizes two things for you:

  1. It is common to have a slow start in your online business. (Especially when, like me, you haven't invested in online education so you can avoid reinventing the wheel and making a lot of mistakes.)

  2. It's normal for your income to ebb and flow, up and down. Growth is never linear. You'll often reach a point where your income will plateau or hover around a similar amount, maybe even *gasp* a tiny bit less, depending on how much you did or didn't work in certain years. It it not normal to 5x your revenue every year or have "quantum leaps" year after year.

In the years I started making the most income, I was working 3 days a week and traveling the world.

  • I lived in South Korea for six months.

  • I lived in NYC for 3 months, and took solo trips to LA, Bali and Arizona.

  • I visited Japan, Italy and Ireland with friends.

  • I was spending more time than ever on my mental health, rest and personal growth.

  • I was dating.

In this podcast episode, I take an honest look at 8 things I did that helped me make six figures while working LESS and traveling.

This isn’t an overnight success story. But I’m guessing yours isn’t either. So if your business growth has felt slow and you’re ready to work less and earn more, tune in (or keep reading) to uncover what I did in my own business to make that happen.

Welcome back to the podcast.

I should probably start by discussing the obvious - the podcast name change. I might go into it deeper in another episode but for now, here's what you need to know...

I renamed my podcast some time ago from The Simple Business Show to Rewild with Nesha Woolery. (If you don't want to read about this name change, skip a few paragraphs!)

At the time, the name change felt like the right move to make. I felt like I had outgrown my original name - The Simple Business Show - and wasn't even sure I wanted the podcast to be solely about business anymore.

So, the name changed.

But hindsight is a wonderful thing. Over time, I realised that actually, my original business name said EXACTLY what my podcast and business is about: building simple businesses. And not only is that great for my brand, but also pretty great for SEO too.

So, I've made the decision to change the name back to The Simple Business Show.

I've been in business for ten years now and one thing I've learned over the years is that in business, you need to make decisions relatively fast. You shouldn't overthink them.

The only time I DON'T make a decision in my business and I deliberately put it off is when I feel there's a big sense of urgency. It sounds counterintuitive but when a decision is coming from your intuition, it often comes to you quietly and calmly, sometimes repeatedly. But when you're making a decision from fear or scarcity, it feels urgent and desperate. That is how I've come to differentiate intuitive decisions from fearful ones. If a decision is feeling urgent, I tell myself I'll make it another day when I'm feeling calmer and my head is clearer.

If I know I'm making an intuitive decision in my business, I prefer to bang the decision out, take action, and accept that hey, I may regret this decision. Hey, I may change my mind in the future. And that's okay, because as long as I'm taking a step forward, I'll eventually start stepping in the right direction. We stop making progress when we allow ourselves to stop making decisions because they're scary. That's when our business growth- and personal growth - is in trouble.

So, that's why I've changed the podcast name BACK to The Simple Business Show.

And to kick off this new season, I want to talk to you about how I built a six figure business working 3 days a week and traveling the world.

I've shared my business journey with you before in episode 46 - "How I built a six fig business and saved £110k by age 26"

I'm 28 now.

But in this episode, I wanted to focus on how I built my business specifically while working 3 days a week and traveling.

Although I want to emphasize that the six figure part isn't that important.

What's more important and is that you learn how to make a consistent full-time income online WITHOUT working full-time hours. And you get to decide what a full-time income is to you, it doesn't have to be six figures for you to gain something from this episode.

The Problem

A lot of online business owners start their business because they want freedom. But then they end up chained to their business and just as overwhelmed and unhappy as they were in their 9-5. Except now, they have a million more hats to wear and can't count on a regular pay cheque coming in on the same day every month.

And the freedom they wanted - the reason they started their business in the first place - isn't really freedom anymore.

Maybe you can relate?

  • The time freedom you wanted is gone because you work all the time. Maybe even on evenings and some weekends.

  • The location freedom you wanted is pointless because even when you're traveling, you're not present enough to enjoy it. You're working, or stressing about your income.

  • And the financial freedom you wanted is actually financial stress because it's unreliable.

  • On top of everything, some of you may find your mental freedom challenged while running a business too. You're juggling a lot of balls, taking on a lot of challenges, and it can be tough sometimes.

If you can relate to any of that, you're not alone. And I want to tell you that I'm so proud of you for being out here, running a business. It takes a courageous person to start a business because you're leaping into uncertainty and discomfort. And it takes a resilient, creative, smart person to keep it going.

But the rewards do outweigh the challenges.

And you can learn how structure your business in a way that is simpler. That doesn't require you to:

  • Hustling and grind all the time.

  • Work 5+ days a week.

  • Feel stressed every day.

How?

I can't speak for everyone but can speak from my own experience. And here's how I built a six fig business while I worked 3 days a week and traveled…

1. I sacrificed fast growth for slow and steady growth.

I didn't magically make six figures in my first year or two.

Fast growth is glamourized on social media. You see a lot of posts like, "How I made six figures in 6 months." And that IS impressive. I am in no way saying it isn't to be shared and celebrated, and I'm not saying it isn't possible.

Content like that does really well because people want results fast. We've lost the ability to delay gratification and be patient while waiting for a result, partially thanks to posts like that making it seem like that's the norm.

The problem starts when those entrepreneurs rarely tell you how stressful it was to do that. Or hold back information that shows you that actually, achieving that in that timeframe is quite rare.

One of the top reasons why businesses fail is surprisingly because they grew too fast.

Think about it: if you grow too fast, you outgrow your business systems and processes and need new ones. You outgrow your capacity and suddenly need to take on more help asap, which requires training that help. You outgrow your mindsets and quickly need to uplevel the way you think which is overwhelming. You experience a lot of growing pains all at once. That's not unbearable. But statistically it is a reason many businesses fail.

If I had worked more - if I had put in full time hours and evenings and weekends and really been on the grind- I know I could have made six figs much sooner. And maybe I could even have overcome all those growing pains. I believe I could have. But I'm happy with the slow and steady pace I grew at because it allowed me to work less and live more.

While financial security is very important to me, making sure I live life to the fullest is important too. And I can't do that if i'm spending most of my life behind a laptop. If I have to sacrifice my mental health and the best years of my life for more money, faster, then thanks but no thanks. I'd rather grow my business and finances slower and steadier if it means I also get to maintain my mental health, make memories, and live an adventurous life. (Although, my income growth in the first few years was definitely lower than it could have been, mainly because of mistakes I made. More on that in another episode!)

2. I focused on my top 3 marketing strategies.

I gave myself permission to not put as much effort into others or be on All The Platforms.

There's a LOT of pressure, especially right now, to be on all the platforms and do All The Marketing. But it's just not sustainable. It's a surefire way to burn out.

So you need to know what your top 3 sources of clients and sales are. And if one of those is a social media platform, you also need to know what forms of content perform best for you on that platform. And then lean in to what works.

3. I decided 3, sometimes 4, days a week was ENOUGH time for me to do what I needed to do.

I made the *choice* to work part-time hours. And I believed it was enough time to do what I need to do & earn ENOUGH. If you tell yourself you can complete your work in 3 days a week, you can. If you tell yourself you can do it in 5 days, you can. Whatever you believe is possible, is possible.

4. I do what I can to make my working days as productive as possible.

This means scheduling my tasks around my period cycle. There's really only 1.5 weeks in a month that you're at your most energetic; it's the follicular phase and ovulation phase. In those phases, especially when I'm ovulating, I have a lot of energy. So I try to make those phases the times when I'm creating content, recording videos, or selling. The luteal phase is more suited to reflection, analyzing and going inward. And when on my period I try to take it slow with tasks that require minimal energy.

I also try to put my phone in another room while I work because if I'm on and off social media all day, it really stunts my focus and productivity.

5. I plan.

I don't plan rigorously and inflexibly. I don't colour code or time block, though that is helpful for some.

But I do plan my 90 days at the start of each quater so I know what I need to focus on to make a living.

I then plan what I need to do during the month.

And then I make a plan at the start of each week for what needs to be done that week.

Another common reason businesses fail is because of lack of strategy and planning. If I didn't plan and know exactly how I'm aiming to make my income each month and what I need to do to make it happen, I'd spend most of my 3 work days faffing around, probably doing tasks that don't ultimately help me reach my income goals. A plan keeps me focused, which is needed when you have limited time to spend on your business.

6. I focused on people and community, not algorithms or vanity metrics.

Social media apps want you to focus on the vanity metrics. It keeps you hooked, obsessed, and constantly opening to app to see what your like count is.

But the metrics that matter most are not your likes. It's the messages and comments you're getting. That's where you build community and relationships and gain the trust of ideal clients.

You don't even need 10k followers to make a great living online. Not even to make six figures. If you sell a service and, say, you have 300 followers, but only 20 of them are your true fans, then selling a £2k service to 20 true fans is £40k a year. Selling them a £3500 service is £70k a year. Selling a £5k service is £100k a year.

So yes, build your audience if your future goal is to launch digital products and make an income. But if not, you don't need to spend so much of your time and energy on this.

7. I built a brand, not just a business.

I started out as a freelance designer but always created long form content like blog posts & videos, and had a social media presence. This helped me build a brand and an audience so I could eventually sell products as well as services, and make some passive income.

If one of your future goals is to make passive income, you need to start building an audience now. Because a service based business doesn't need a big audience to make money but with products, it DOES rely on your audience size.

It does take more effort and time to grow an audience so you may be thinking "if I want to work less, I don't want to ADD to my todo list." But this particular point is to benefit future you, not necessarily present you. Build an audience now so future you can cut down on client work, if that's what your long term goal is.

And if you're wondering where you should grow an audience, the answer is most definitely an email list. But to grow that, you need to get traffic to it. So try growing your audience on a social media platform, and regularly offering that audience a freebie if they join your newsletter. If one of your top 3 marketing methods for a social media platform, that's the one you should focus on growing.

8. I did my best to keep my life SIMPLE & live below my means.

Because I didn't need a TON of money to live a good life and do the things I wanted to do - like travel and save-  it meant that I didn't often stress about my income. I didn't have to. Living below my means kept my nervous system calm, and that kept me from burning out often, which helped me sustain my business for so long.

If my nervous system had always been on edge, I would have started making fearful decisions, making content that seemed desperate, and I wouldn't have been able to sustain my business feeling that way all the time. Let alone grow it.

So to recap, those 8 points were...

Should You Start A Youtube Channel or a Podcast?

If you've been wanting to create long-form content for a while (blog posts, videos, podcasts etc), not just short-form content like social media posts, you've probably wondered...

What type of long-form content is best - a Youtube channel or a podcast?!

First, I want to celebrate you for wanting to create long-form content at all! This isn't something that online service providers necessarily need to do to fill their roster with clients - you can do that through referrals, social media and even email marketing - but it DOES help.

Back when I was a freelance graphic designer, I remember my most well-known client telling me she found me through my blog and that my content showed her that I knew my craft and that I was trustworthy. So long-form content is a great way to build credibility with potential clients if you have the time to create it.

It's also almost a necessity if you want to launch some kind of digital product in the future, like a course, because your long-form content can drive traffic to your conversion machine - this is what I call the funnel you'd sell a course through - and it can grow your audience. And audience growth is really important for digital product sellers because only 1-3% of audiences, on average, convert into course sales. That means that for someone with a digital product business model, audience size matters.

There are quite a few forms of long-form content but if you're debating Youtube or a podcast, which one will be the most profitable?

The answer isn't quite what you'd expect.

The truth is, all marketing platforms can work. The most important thing to do is pick strategies you enjoy because then you'll be more likely to stick with them consistently.

BUT if you're equally torn between Youtube and a podcast then first, here are the pros and cons of each...

Youtube Pros

  • It’s so much easier to get discovered by new potential clients and customers on Youtube because it is a search engine and searching is what users primarily use it for! Whereas the search feature is not the feature that podcast listeners use most in their podcast player. They usually find their favourite podcast creators OFF the platform and THEN subscribe to their podcast.

  • The shelf life of Youtube videos is long. Your videos can be watched for YEARS. (My most popular videos today are videos I made 5-7 years ago that are still going strong!)

  • You can repurpose videos into ALL the content forms: extract the audio and use it as a podcast, make reels, make Tiktoks, transcribe the video and make newsletters and blog posts...

  • Youtube has a Partners Program - after getting 1000 subscribers and 4000 hours of watch time, you can show ads on your videos and earn money from them. (As well as getting brand deals and making money that way.)

Podcast Pros

  • You don't have to wear make up or make yourself look presentable if you're someone who feels they need to do this for Youtube. This takes the pressure off of creating long-form content.

  • It's really easy because you don't have to focus on the camera, just on the audio.

  • It’s more suited to quieter or introverted personality types.

  • You can develop stronger relationships with podcast listeners than Youtube listeners. This is because you can be more conversational, more vulnerable, less “how to” ish, and overall more human. You can make an emotional connection with listeners pretty easily.

  • They’re faster to create.

  • They’re great if you have a target market that is always on the go. For example, parents or overwhelmed business owners that don’t have the time to sit and watch Youtube!

Youtube Cons

  • You have to be on camera. That means camera-ready!

  • You need more equipment, like a web cam.

  • It lends itself more to how-to content than anything deeper.

  • It helps if you are naturally charismatic. If you are naturally more quiet or subdued, it might not suit your personality as much as podcasting. (But that doesn’t mean you can’t learn a few tips and tricks to become more comfortable on camera!)

Podcast Cons

  • Less discoverability. You won’t reach a lot of new people with your podcast organically from the podcast platform. A podcast is really for your existing audience.

  • Believe it or not they’re a little harder to edit than videos!

  • You’ll need to pay for a place to host your podcast, like Libsyn.

  • You can get away without using a mic for a Youtube video, but not for a podcast. I recommend the Blue Yeti.
