Business is seasonal. Which season are you in & what do you need in THIS season?

If you’ve been around my corner of the internet for the last ten years, you’ll have heard me talk about seasonal business quite a lot.

Business, just like nature, is seasonal. In nature, we see luscious green trees producing fruit. And then we see them let go of their leaves. And we see them rest for a season, until they start blooming again.

Nature is seasonal. And we are a part of nature. So it stands to reason that we are seasonal too, and that means our businesses are as well.

There are seasons of growth, seasons of maintaining what you've built, and there are even seasons for settling, resting, winding down.

If you tend to put pressure on yourself to always be growing, thriving and scaling or else you feel like a failure or like you “aren’t working hard enough” then this episode is for you.

You'll learn...

- The seasons all business owners go through.

- Why sustaining what you have or settling for less (for now) does not make you a failure.

- Why you can't always be thriving, and why that's OK.

Business, just like nature, is seasonal. In nature, we see luscious green trees producing fruit. And then we see them let go of their leaves. And we see them rest for a season. Until they start blooming again.

Nature is seasonal. And we are a part of nature. So it stands to reason that we are seasonal too, and that means our businesses are as well.

There are seasons for growth, seasons for maintaining what we’ve built, and there are even seasons for settling or resting. And I'll explain all of them in sec.

I believe the reason so many business owners feel like ‘bad’ business owners is because they put the unrealistic expectation on themselves to always be thriving. Always be in their summer season, where they have lots of energy, they're releasing new offers, getting booked out, and it's all going so well. They have the "work/life balance" thing all worked out.

But that's not how life works.

You aren't always in one state forever. Including a thriving state. I have no interest whatsoever in putting pressure on myself to always be "living my best life." In and outside of business. Because when we carry the expectation that life is supposed to always be that way, we automatically make ourselves perpetually disappointed. Because life cannot always be a certain way. Life is about experiencing a full spectrum of states and emotions, thriving and otherwise.

We can't always be growing and thriving in business. That's one season: your scaling season. In our scaling season, we are scaling and growing our income. Likely because we have the time, desire and mental/emotional space to do so.

Then there's the season of simply maintaining what we have already built. Often we enter a season of sustaining when our lives are a little busy and we have other things to focus on outside of our business that are more important to us than scaling. Maybe we're working on our marriage. Getting married. Traveling the world. Moving to a new area and house. Starting another business.  In those seasons of life, we often don't have the capacity to also focus on scaling our business and it isn't our priority. So then we focus on simply sustaining what we have. There's nothing wrong with that. You don't have to always be growing in order to be a successful business owner.

Lastly, there's what I call a season of Settling. THIS is the season no business owners seem to talk about but I'm gonna be real with you here. Occasionally, there are Winter seasons in your business. Seasons where you can't work because of illness, burnout, or a family problem. Maybe you got dumped and it turned your whole life upside down. Maybe you're grieving the loss of a loved one. These are hard seasons and you're not even going to be thinking of scaling your business during these times. The hard thing is that these things can last months or years. So it may be that in this season, you make the decision to scale back your expenses and what you pay yourself so that you can stop focusing on work and focus on whatever is the priority in that season. Anyone who has suffered with a mental illness will know what it's like to have to say “I can't work at all in this season. it just isn't going to happen.”

That's okay. I want you to know that's okay.

It doesn't mean you're a bad business owner or you are failing.

Because winter is just a season, and if there’s something all of us can guarantee, it’s that seasons pass. Eventually the flowers will bloom and the sun will shine again and so will you. Even if, in your business, you have to settle for less for a while - less growth, or perhaps even less income - it does not always have to stay that way. There is always the next season. And if you don't think so then you need to trust in your resilience a little more than that.

So, which season are you in? Are you growing, sustaining, or settling right now? There is no right or wrong. DM me.

If you’d like to work with me, check out my courses or join the waitlist for coaching.

If you resonate with the idea of seasonal business, I encourage you to also look into seasonal living because the same theories apply and there are lots of benefits (and amazing articles online) about the topic!

How To Stop Procrastinating & Get Work Done (Advice for Online Business Owners)

Are you in need of rest or are you just procrastinating?

It can be hard to know when to let yourself lay on the sofa and binge Love Is Blind and when you're really just putting off The Work.

I totally get it.

My knee-jerk response when I'm feeling overwhelmed, unsure of what to do, or don't know where to start is to watch TV, go on Instagram or play Candy Crush.

Since the pandemic, I've noticed I procrastinate a lot more than before and my ability to focus is a lot worse than it used to be.

Maybe you can relate?

If you can then I want to invite you to listen to this episode!

In it, I'm sharing 1 simple strategy I've been implementing to cut down on procrastination and get work done.

If you're feeling completely unmotivated in your online service business right now then I hope this episode helps. I'm not telling you it absolutely will because everyone is unique and what works for some won't work for others. I can only ever share with you the things that have worked for me and my students/clients. But if you feel unmotivated to work, and you're really procrastinating lately, give this a listen and let me know what you think over on IG!

Disclaimer though: If you're struggling with a mental illness and that is why you are procrastinating, this episode won't necessarily apply to you and i'd recommend getting help from a licensed medical professional if possible.

If you don’t think it’s related to mental illness but you need 1:1 help overcoming your habit of procrastination, you can learn more about my coaching here.

Sometimes when we're stuck in this place where we just don't want to do anything but watch tv, we can scare ourselves into thinking the worst.

That maybe we're depressed.

Or maybe we've lost our mojo and this is how we'll be now, forever.

Or this work clearly isn't what we're meant to be doing or else we'd be hopping to our desks excitedly each morning, ready to crack on.

Some of those scenarios may be true for some of you. This is where self awareness comes in - you need it to be able to assess why YOU are procrastinating.

You might need to take a break.

You might need to get medical help.

You might need to change your whole business.

Or... you might not.

I want to share what has been working really well for me in helping me overcome my procrastination.

First, I totally get it. Whenever i feel overwhelmed, my go to response is to freeze. So procrastination is the response I most fall into, more so than hustling and ignoring how I feel. If I find myself feeling overwhelmed or unsure how to do something or where to start, I'll freeze and go and watch tv. Classic procrastination.

And ever since the pandemic, i noticed this response getting worse and worse. To the point where i'd get up and the first thing I’d do was watch tv. That's was never EVER me in the past.

I also noticed since the pandemic that I find it harder to focus than ever before, and I think a lot of other business owners will relate. I don't think it's surprising since screen time has increased by 76% since the pandemic, according to Startup Magazine.

I think that worldwide crisis pushed most of humanity into spending more time on screens, on apps like TikTok and Youtube, where our focus is constantly being pulled all over the place, where distractions are everywhere because there's always another video, another dopamine hit. And when these videos are now just 10-15 secs long, it can be easy to lose hours a day to the scroll and not get bored. I think that has played a big role in the deterioration of our focus but thats just my theory.

Here is one of the simple ways I've been taking back my focus and overcoming my procrastination:

I try to embody someone who inspires me and ask myself, what would they do right now? Would they sit here at 10am and watch another episode of Love Is Blind or would they get to work?

Sometimes it's easy to look at yourself and think "I can't do this. I don't want to do this." And some days that's fair enough. I'm an advocate for rest and balance. But when it becomes a daily pattern, that's when it becomes a problem. So it really helps me to act AS IF I am someone else. To borrow their personality for a day. To borrow a quality of theirs that I'm lacking right now.

So if there's someone who inspires you, try thinking like them. Tell yourself you're going to act like them today and see how different your decisions are throughout the day. See what you get done when you're embodying a person you admire.

Because here's the thing…

Sometimes we don't believe we are capable of something, in this instance that something is being productive and getting work done. We tell ourselves things like “i'm not productive. I'm lazy. I can't do this. i'm broken and i'll never get my mojo back.”

And it's ok if you don't believe you can do this yet. Because you don't need to believe you can, in order to do it. You just need to act as if you're the kind of person who believes they can. And if you do that enough, you'll eventually find you DO believe you can because you've seen yourself doing it. And you no longer have to embody someone else or the quality that person has because that is now genuinely a part of who you are.

I hope you found this episode helpful. But I appreciate that there are some of you who would like more extensive help from me, so if that's you then there are a few ways i can help you:

Overwhelm Vs Stress - Why The Difference Matters

Are you overwhelmed? Or are you stressed?

Did you know there's a difference?

A little stress can be healthy for us. It can be a good motivator. But overwhelm "makes us incapable of taking action", as Brene Brown says. "We're so consumed by the pressures on us that we can't do anything about it. Overwhelm means an extreme level of stress and emotional or cognitive intensity to the point of feeling unable to function."

How have you been feeling lately?

Have you felt energized and productive?

A bit stressed but getting on with it?

Or do you feel like you're almost incapable of working?

  • Feeling perpetually tired and unmotivated.

  • Consistently procrastinating beyond normal reason.

  • One look at your todo list and you find yourself going into Avoidance Mode and just watching the telly.

Can you relate?

If you're feeling stressed or overwhelmed then I wrote today's brand new podcast episode with you in mind. It follows on from last week's episode about 1 simple way to feel less overwhelmed in your business.

In this week's ep, you'll learn...

  • The difference between overwhelm and stress.

  • 6 ways to turn down your stress or overwhelm.

  • What The 90 Second Emotion is and how it help set you free from being chained to feelings of stress or overwhelm.

  • The importance of movement, permission, and seasonal thinking when trying to recover from (or prevent) overwhelm.

"When we're stressed we feel a lot of outside, or even internal, pressure. But we can handle it. We know what actions to take to fix it. We can logistically and emotionally take on these actions even if we're concerned about how much time and effort they'll take. Overwhelm on the other hand means we're incapable of taking action. We're so consumed by the pressures on us that we can't do anything about it. Overwhelm means an extreme level of stress and emotional or cognitive intensity to the point of feeling unable to function." - Brene Brown

When I heard that quote, I knew I wanted to bring it to the podcast. Because there's a lot in there that can be helpful to us as business owners.

First, that stress is hard but it's something we can handle.

In fact, stress can sometimes be good for us. I'd go as far as saying it can sometimes act as a motivator for us to get things done. Ever had bills looming over you that kicked your butt into action and pushed you to do the work to find new clients or launch something new? Yet, when no pressure is on, you find it harder to motivate yourself to look for clients or market yourself? Sometimes a little stress can daresay be a good driver for us. And can even show us how capable and resilient we are.

Yet overwhelm, as Brene said, means we're ‘incapable of taking action.’ It's an ‘extreme level of stress. An emotional and cognitive intensity that makes us unable to function.’ And I don't need to explain to you how damaging that can for your income.

So today, I want to give you a few things you can do when you're stressed or overwhelmed, to help you shift into a state where you can work again with more ease and peace of mind.

(Although I’d like to add: if you’re overwhelmed to the point of feeling unable to work, you likely need more help than these tips. I’d recommend working with a therapist if you feel it’s a mental health struggle, or working with a business coach if you feel that’s what you need. If you’d like to work with me, you can sign up to my coaching waitlist here. I’m opening up 1:1 and group coaching very soon!)

How to prevent or lessen your stress/overwhelm

  1. Take a break.

Listen to ep 72 on the importance of taking a break even when you feel like you're too busy to do so.

Over the years I've learned that it's those times when I MUST take the break. Because carrying on leads to poor work and burnout. But a break reenergizes us and gives us new ideas and motivation so that when we get back to the desk, we produce incredible work and do it while feeling good, not feeling crappy There have been times over the 10 years of my business when I've felt so overwhelmed I’ve cried, but then had a break and a walk and literally wrote 10 podcast eps that same afternoon. Overwhelm is a feeling and it can be released. Feelings don't stick around forever. And by taking a break, you're helping the feeling move on faster.

  2. Feel the feeling - don't just push it down. When we do, those feelings come out sideways. Through sickness, or burnout, or just chronically feeling unhappy in our business. The sooner you allow yourself to feel it, the sooner it releases.

    How do you feel it?

I like to sit still and just get in touch with the feeling in my body. Where do I feel it's residing in my body? Then name the emotion. I tell myself it's okay to feel this way, it's human.

Psychologist Alyson Stone says “Feelings are like ocean waves,” says , “they rise, crest and recede, all day long.” And brain scientist Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor says, "emotions last just 90 seconds. After that, we're simply re-stimulating our internal circuitry."

Know what that means? It means that after 90 seconds, if we still feel a feeling... it's partly because we're choosing to. And there's so much power in understanding that. Because that means if we just really let ourselves feel a certain emotion that's coming up, it'll pass so much sooner than if we avoid or ignore it. And that includes feelings of overwhelm and stress.

Move your body. Go for a walk, or dance, do jumping jacks. Movement can shift our mood, which brightens our mindset and allows us to work from a more positive place. Or at least puts us in the place to have the mental capacity to tackle our issue of why we're so stressed and overwhelmed and how we can overcome it.

  3. Break your project down into tiny little pieces. Focus on small piece by piece instead of the big picture. After a while, you’ll notice the pieces add up to something huge.

  4. Give yourself permission to stop doing things or change things to better suit your wellbeing. For example, if you don't have the mental capacity to make reels showing your face then make reels where it's just text overlayed on a video of the ocean or of your morning walk. If  you don't have the mental capacity to design full websites right now, create a mini offer where you sell sales pages done in a day. Give yourself permission to stop things or make things easier for yourself. Even if it’s just temporary.

  5. Adjust your business according to the season you're in. Certain seasons of life are more hectic than others, that's how it is for even the calmest of people.

If you've had a baby, that's going to be a crazy season. If you're moving house, or planning a wedding, or you're struggling with a health issue, those are all difficult seasons that take a toll on your time. So in your business, it's okay to shift things around that season to make life easier for yourself.

I've given myself permission in this season to focus on selling coaching more than courses because although it sounds counterintuitive, it's easier to sell because you can sell less of them at a higher price. It means I don't have to create as much content. And it means I get to talk about topics here on the podcast other than just the topics of my courses.

If you are feeling overwhelmed or stressed by your businesses and processes or lack thereof then I invite you to check out my free class, 10 Steps To Go From Overwhelmed To Organized.

1 Simple Way To Feel Less Overwhelmed In Your Business

When feelings of stress or overwhelm come up in your business, how do you respond?

Most business owners...

A. Freeze - their todo list feels so overwhelming they don't feel capable of starting at all. They procrastinate instead, doing everything except the tasks they're supposed to be doing.

B. Avoid or ignore the emotion - they march on with their many projects and tasks, pushing through the stress and overwhelm to do the work.

Which reaction do you have?

Without a little self-awareness, I fell under category A. I've had times when I've felt so overwhelmed that I just checked out and sat in front of the TV all day, went walking for hours in the woods, or messed around on my phone all afternoon.

But this didn't get me anywhere. In fact, each time I reacted this way to feeling overwhelmed, I was training my brain to make my freeze response a pattern.

Then I realised there is a healthier way to deal with feelings of overwhelm and stress when they come up.

A simple way to both manage the feeling, release it, AND get back into the swing of work.

In fact, this one simple strategy has helped me go from feeling stressed and frozen to having 7 podcast ideas, recording them all in one afternoon, and coming up with my next coaching offer.

Tune in to this episode to find out what it is!

- 1 simple way to feel less overwhelmed in your business

- How to feel your feelings and release them

I just got in from an hour break where I went on a very windy, wet, yet beautiful walk. I've come home with what was 3 and turned into 7 podcast ideas, 2 things I'm giving myself permission to simplify in my business, one Instagram story after I haven't posted on there in a week, and clarity on a new 1:1 coaching offer I have been really wanting to release.

What's more, I have more ENERGY this afternoon.

Yet, what you wouldn't guess from my state now is that my state this morning was completely different.

I was feeling stressed about my tiny home build, which if you watch my vlog, has been a rollercoaster of emotions and learning.

And that stress bled it's way through to my business. I woke up thinking I was going to work on a specific thing for my course, Simple Sales School, and then found myself feeling overwhelmed and unable to do anything.

But here's what I've learned over the last 10 years as a business owner:

In those moments, it is always best to allow myself to feel my feelings. Forcing myself to bury them and work is never good for me.

In fact, this sounds stupidly simple and obvious. Feel your feelings, don't bury them, or they come out sideways. Simple, right? Yet I think it's a lesson in emotional wellbeing that not many of us learned. And one of the biggest lessons of my life.

In fact, I spent 3 years of my life unable to move on from a particular traumatic event. It was on my mind every day, I couldn't let it go. I did All The Things to move on from it: therapy, coaching, read all the books, joined the memberships, did the meditations and the affirmations and you name it. And in the end, I realised one of the reasons it was still on my mind and heart was because I hadn't allowed myself to feel the feeling of regret. My mind or perhaps my ego had tricked me into doing everything BUT feeling this emotion of regret. Because it was afraid of that emotion.

And that was a big life lesson to me: that many of us subconsciously do things to AVOID feeling a certain emotion. But only when we allow ourselves to feel it can we actually release it and move on from it.

So back to feeling stressed or overwhelmed in your business. First, it's natural to feel that way sometimes. And when I do, I try not to avoid the emotion and keep working, and I try not to freeze and stop working.

Instead, I...

Name, feel and try to release the feeling in whatever way feels best, even if that's crying. Crying is a good thing, it's emotional release and it's so important for our wellbeing.

Journal for 5 mins if my mind feelings a little loud and I need to unscramble my thoughts and feelings

Then I do something to move myself out of that state - take a break, go for a walk, have a dance break in my living room

The times you feel you’re too busy to have a break, go for a walk, or even go on holiday are exactly the times you should.

If you keep working when your nervous system is in a stressed state, you won’t produce your best work, you’ll feel crappy when you're working, which will lead to you procrastinating a lot because you don't want to work, and eventually burn out.

And your problem ends up snowballing from you feeling stressed, to you being completely overwhelmed and unable to work for a much longer period of time because burnout can sometimes take months or even years to reocver from. And if you're self employed, you don't get paid sick leave. Not many self employed people can afford to take a year off.

But when you take the time to care for yourself, you get your nervous system to a calmer place again. And that’s when you’ll have more ideas, energy and motivation. And most importantly, you’ll feel better.

I could have let today's bad morning spiral into a bad day. But you don't have to let all bad mornings become bad days.

The next time you have a stressed/overwhelmed moment, let yourself feel that and then do something to shift your mood and energy before you sit back down to your desk to work. A bad moment doesn’t need to be a bad day. And if you try this and it still is a bad day, or you don't have the energy to try this at all, that's okay. Because tomorrow is a new day. We just get up and go again.

How to Avoid Slow Stages & Recession-Proof Your Online Business

How can you avoid slow stages in business?

And how can you recession-proof your business?

Is it even possible?!

The honest answer is.... no.

That wasn't what you were expecting, right?

Here's the truth: all parts of life ebb and flow, up and down, and business is no exception to that. You can't avoid the lows. What makes you a successful business owner isn't that you avoid the lows, it's how you deal with them when they happen and how you prepare for them.

Tough times don't last forever, and that means good times don't last forever either. The sooner we accept that fact of life, the less stressed we are, because we can then drop the unrealistic expectation that growth is linear and that our businesses are failing if they are not always on an upward trajectory.

I hope this doesn’t seem like I’m being a Debbie Downer, but I’d rather be honest and realistic than dishonest because I know that “5 ways to recession proof your business” would be a hot topic that sells courses and gets lots of views.

Although this may not be the answer you were hoping for, there is FREEDOM in embracing this truth. And even though you can’t avoid slow stages or recession proof your business, you can prepare for them so that your business doesn’t break down when they happen.

In this episode, you'll learn...

  • 4 ways to prepare for slow seasons and recessions so they don't overly hurt your business or impact your lifestyle

  • Why you need to build a brand, not just a business

  • How your purpose, values, services and pricing can create a community that is loyal to your business even during hard times

  • Why living "below your means" is the key to inner peace during slow seasons (and the key to much more.)
