Faceless marketing: It's been gaining momentum in the online business world, with many saying it’s the next big thing.

But here's the thing—I have some reservations.

Today, I'm going to break down five reasons why I believe faceless marketing is more of a trend than a sustainable strategy for online businesses.

I want to preface this by saying that if you love it, do it! I’m not hating on you or saying it’s “wrong.” I’m just sharing my opinion on it, from the perspective of someone who’s been an online entrepreneur for 11 years and has seen many trends come and go.

1: Lack of human connection

When you remove the human element from your brand, you risk losing that authentic connection with your audience. People crave authenticity—they want to know the faces behind the brand, especially in a day and age where so many people are skeptical (rightfully) because there are sketchy people selling sketchy products & services online, and making sketchy income claims. Faceless marketing can feel impersonal and detached, leading to a lack of trust and loyalty from your audience.

Humans do not trust other humans very easily if they are hiding their face because hidden faces = hidden identity. And if buyers can’t be sure who is on the other side of the brand, or be sure they truly have the credentials they say they have, they perceive buying from you to be a high risk.

2: The only successful faceless brands I see are teaching faceless marketing.

Since most of the faceless brands we see are SELLING us faceless marketing, does faceless marketing really work that well for the majority of businesses that sell something else?

I think this is the biggest problem.

3. Long-term Sustainability.

Faceless marketing may yield short-term gains because it’s really popular right now, but what about the long haul? Building a sustainable business requires more than just hopping on trends. It demands a solid foundation built on trust, transparency, and genuine human connection.

I’ve been an online entrepreneur for almost 12 years so believe me when I say that you need to think long-term and not short term if you want to be successful online. I try not to follow too many trends. When everyone turns left, you turn right. It’s a very simple way to stand out in the market!

4. Limited Differentiation

In a sea of faceless brands, it's challenging to stand out and carve a unique identity for your business. Without a distinct personality or voice to set you apart, you run the risk of blending into the background and becoming just another nameless entity in the marketplace. I can’t tell you how many times each day I see a beige reel of someone stirring a coffee, or how much I see the same stock market videos.

The market is oversaturated with faceless brands. Which begs the question… if the simplest way to stand out these days is to show your face and be yourself, then why not?

5. Missed Opportunity for Connection.

One of the beauties of entrepreneurship is the ability to build meaningful connections with your audience. Faceless marketing robs you of that opportunity. By hiding behind a veil of anonymity, you miss out on the chance to forge genuine relationships and foster a loyal community around your brand.

Community in the online space is everything.

It’s what will keep your business alive and thriving for years. I have people buying from me who have followed my brand for 8+ years!

All you need is 1000 true fans. People who connect with you, your personality, your values, and need what you offer. 1000 true fans is all you need to run a thriving business for years. Because even if only 100 of them buy from you each year at $1k, that’s $100k a year.

But in my opinion, faceless brands will struggle to build that because people crave real

Why is faceless marketing so trendy in 2024?

I think the reason so many people gravitate to faceless marketing is because collectively, people are tired. And showing your face online in your content requires energy.

There are other reasons too of course. You might feel insecure about how you look, or feel that your race or religion would stop people buying from you.

Here’s what I’d like to say:

  • If you just don’t have the energy to make face-to-camera reels, don’t. You don’t HAVE to talk to the camera (I rarely do in my reels), but you can still show your face in some content. The trick to doing this without it feeling draining is to batch your content. Then you don’t have to physically muster the energy to do your make up and record a reel or story every day or week, just do it once a month.

My Content Batching Blueprint and Story Sprint will help you with this! They teach my step-by-step system for batching 1 month of content or Instagram stories in 1 day.

  • If you don’t want to show your face because you feel no one will buy from you because of your race or religion, let me ask you… do you really want to serve clients and customers who wouldn’t buy from you if they knew who you really were? I know I wouldn’t. I’d rather those people see me so they can go and buy from someone else. There are more than enough clients & customers in the world who will buy from you, regardless of your race, religion, gender, background, etc.

  • If you’re shy or you don’t want friends and family to see you posting, I feel you. Block friends and family. (It sounds harsher than it is but this is your business account, not a personal account!) Then start small with your profile photo and real first name on your bio.

My Honest Opinion About Master Resell Rights

In the fast-paced world of online entrepreneurship, the allure of quick profits often leads us down paths that may not align with our long-term goals. One such trend that's been gaining traction is the purchase of courses with master resell rights (MRR). But before you dive headfirst into this seemingly lucrative opportunity, it's essential to understand the potential pitfalls involved.

Join me asI share my honest opinion about master resell rights and uncover alternative paths to sustainable success in the online business world.

Disclaimer: I’m not trying to yuck someone’s yum here. If you sell a course with MRR and it’s working for you, you do you! This episode is here to make sure anyone who is considering MRR sees the cons and not just the pros.

Article

In the vast ocean of online opportunities, one trend that's been making waves lately is the purchase of courses with master resell rights (MRR). It's a tempting idea: buy a course, gain the rights to sell it, and pocket 100% of the profits. What’s not to like? BUT is it truly the golden ticket to success, or could it be a potential pitfall disguised as a shortcut? Let's delve into the realities of this trend and why, despite its allure, it might not be the wisest choice for your business.

Understanding Master Resell Rights:

Before we explore the pitfalls, let's clarify what master resell rights entail. Essentially, when you buy a course with MRR, you're granted permission to sell it yourself and keep all the profits.

1. Oversaturated Market:

Picture this: you stumble upon a seemingly irresistible offer for a course with MRR. However, if it's readily available to you, it's equally accessible to countless others in your niche. This leads to an oversaturated market flooded with identical products and brands selling in identical ways, diminishing their perceived value and making it challenging for you to stand out.

2. Reputation Risks:

Associating your brand with products you didn't personally create can tarnish your reputation and credibility if that creator or brand gets in trouble.

I personally don’t resell anyone else’s products unless I know the person well (i.e. we’ve met multiple times and I know their values, trust them to be an ethical person, and know their product is amazing.)

3. Integrity in Online Business:

It’s catching a bit of a scammy reputation. I’m not saying it is a scam. I’m saying that there has been a lot of sketchy people selling it as their own, changing the name of it, and so on. This leads to people buying it thinking they’re buying something else, and realizing they’ve been duped and it’s the same course they may already have bought, or seen around.

I’m also pretty convinced that this MRR thing is the reason why there’s SO many women on Instagram saying they can help you “make money online” who have 2 followers and have never actually made money online.

I’m a big believer that if you haven’t gotten real results with something, or you don’t have any experience with it, you should not be selling something about it.

People with no online business experience shouldn’t be teaching people about business.

It’s like someone who’s never performed open heart surgery offering to perform open heart surgery on you.

Try to avoid the trend of selling something just because you think it will make money quickly and easily. You don’t need to do that. All of us have enough knowledge and expertise we can monetize. We all have at least one transformation we’ve personally been through successfully that we can package up into an offer that helps others achieve the same transformation. (And it doesn’t have to be related to making money! I have students who manage podcasts,

“But I’m a beginner and I need to make money. Aren’t I supposed to fake it til I make it?”

No.

Go out there and get some experience!

  • Offer to take on discounted beta clients or students

  • Offer to do projects for free in exchange for testimonials

  • If you want to teach something you have not achieved yet, document your journey to achieving it on Instagram. THEN sell an offer teaching the transformation.

4. Quality Control Concerns:

Just because a course comes with master resell rights doesn't guarantee its quality. Sacrificing quality for the sake of quick profits can damage your reputation and erode the trust of your audience. Instead of prioritizing short-term gains, focus on creating high-quality, original content that adds genuine value to your audience's lives.

5. Embracing Authenticity and Long-Term Growth:

Rather than succumbing to the trend of master resell rights, consider investing your time and energy into creating your own high-quality offers. Whether it's low-ticket digital products or high-ticket services, once you find something that sells well it will outlast the trend of MRR. While it may require more effort upfront, the long-term rewards far outweigh the allure of quick profits.

(PS- I have a free list of 100 digital product ideas to spark your creativity!)

6. A Path to Sustainable Success:

In today's competitive landscape, authenticity and uniqueness are your greatest assets. By embracing your individuality, you'll not only outshine the competition but also build a resilient and sustainable business for the future.

The only thing that makes you stand out online is YOU. Don’t remove yourself from your brand by selling something someone else made, in the exact way they’ve taught 1000’s of others to sell it.

I created and now sell The Content Batching Blueprint - my method for batching 1 month of content in 1 day. There are already 100’s of creators teaching you how to make money online or sell on Instagram but very few teach it the way I do. This is one simple way that I stand out.

ARTICLE

Take a little trip back in time with me to 2012.

I was working as a Pizza Hut waitress and retail worker, paid about £6.59 per hour at the time, and I had a toxic boss who was super nice to my face but talked about me when I wasn’t around.

I’m neurodivergent so I already felt a bit different, despite not being diagnosed yet. I was also a pretty shy teen and I didn’t fit in well with some of the more extroverted staff members. It was at these jobs that I first remember FEELING different and being TREATED differently.

I wanted OUT.

I wanted to be my own boss.

I wanted the freedom to live and work from ANYWHERE in the world.

I wanted to do creative work I loved, NOT mop the floors of the restaurant or straighten coat hangers to pass the time.

I had a blog at the time - it was my side hustle. And one day, someone offered to pay me £150 to design a blog for them. (Very underpriced but at the time it felt like a lot!)

I told my coworker (who was studying graphic design at university) and here’s what she said:

“You can’t charge someone money for that, you’re not qualified.”

And she was right… I didn’t have any kind of degree. I was just a waitress and retail worker. I started thinking… “I’m not experienced enough for this. I don’t have enough money to start a business anyway. How will I even fund this?”

So what did I do?

I accepted the client anyway. I taught myself web and graphic design. I used my savings to buy a better laptop + Adobe programs. I used my credit card for a couple of business tools. I raised my prices over time as I gained more experience.

And guess what?

In time, I was earning enough from web design to quit my 9-5 and get on a flight to Thailand.

(If you want to do the same, sign up for The Profitable & Productive Web Designer Bootcamp before April 15th!)

Web design changed the trajectory of my life.

WHY WEB DESIGN?

I was always a creative - I loved art, drawing, photography, and writing.

I would redesign my blog for fun, just because.

If you’re a creative person and you have a good eye for design, even if it’s not necessarily WEB design, you just really enjoy interior design and choosing color palettes etc… If you haven’t started a business yet, I’d really recommend considering web design.

Even though people can buy website templates nowadays, there are lots of businesses worldwide that:

  • don’t have the technical skills to do that

  • don’t have the desire or time to

  • want a custom designed website that isn’t gonna look the same as 50 others

Because the world is all online now, businesses often lose tens of thousands if they don’t have a website. So web designers are needed and always will be. Did someone say… job security? ;)

HOW I LANDED MY FIRST CLIENTS

  • Don’t be afraid to ask for referrals - my first client came from a fellow designer.

  • I used social media - I ran a limited-time offer on logo designs.

  • My friend Paige didn’t use social media, she used SEO to rank no.1 on google for Squarespace web designer.

There are so many ways to land clients. Choose one, two at most, and give it your all.

COULD WEB DESIGN BE THE THING THAT GIVES YOU THE FREEDOM IT GIVES ME?

You might want to start a web design business so you can be your own boss, work from home (or anywhere in the world), and have full control of your time.

Or maybe you already sell brand design, virtual assistant services, copywriting, etc, and want to add web design to your services. One web project could be about $2500. Imagine if you just take 2 each month? That’s $5K/month. Or one each month is an extra $2.5k. $30k a year in total.

If you’re curious about web design, sign up to my good friend Paige’s FREE Profitable & Productive Web Designer Bootcamp!
