“If you always avoid discomfort, you will wake up in 1 year in exactly the same place you’re in right now. Because you can’t achieve real growth without temporary discomfort. Discomfort is a requirement for growth.”
This is something I wrote and posted on Instagram, and a sentiment I tried to live my life by in 2021.
I sat in discomfort for most of the year, choosing to sit through uncomfortable situations and feelings instead of running away because I wanted to finally see what was on the other side of discomfort.
When it comes to our businesses (and our lives), many of us avoid taking risks, making changes, pursuing dreams and investing in ourselves because we can’t tolerate the discomfort we feel when we contemplate doing these things.
But by avoiding the temporary discomfort of going for the thing we really want, we actually choose long-term discomfort, which is ten times worse.
By choosing not to start our dream business because starting feels (temporarily) uncomfortable, we choose the long term discomfort of wasting more years of our precious life in a job we hate.
By choosing not to invest in the business course, program or mentor we feel pulled towards, we choose the long term discomfort of growing at a really slow pace because we chose to reinvent the wheel instead of getting help from someone who has done what we want to do.
By choosing not to start the podcast or Youtube channel we’ve been dreaming of because we’re uncomfortable with friends and family members finding it, we’re choosing the long term discomfort of withholding ourselves from all the good that could have come from that if we had gone for it. The audience, the income, the opportunities, the fun and fulfillment…
In what ways are you unconsciously choosing long-term discomfort over short-term? And if you could talk to your future self, what would they have to say about it?
