My top 3 traffic referrers: Direct, Google, Pinterest

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about how to grow my website traffic. Website traffic always decreases over Summer because people are out enjoying the sunshine instead of reading blogs, but that doesn’t stop me wanting to boost my traffic anyway.

Since I started selling products, I’ve realized that I need to put more effort into growing my blog traffic so that more people see my products and join my list.

I want to start using Pinterest ads more frequently. I tried them out after taking a course called Pinfinite Growth and saw amazing results from one £18 ad I made, so I’m going to do more of those to grow my traffic.

I've also started Youtube channel (YAY!) and plan on posting my blog posts as videos there. I’ve never been an avid watcher of business Youtube channels but I recently started watching a lot of travel channels and it really got me thinking about starting a channel of videos just for designers. If you have any thoughts on this, let me know in our Facebook group!

The other thing I want to do to grow my traffic is start posting my blog post articles as articles on Medium. Mariah mentioned this in one of her recent podcast episodes and I thought it was genius! It won’t take very long to repost an article I’ve already written, but it could really help drive more traffic to my website.

My newsletter growth:

Number of subscribers: 8,230

Most popular opt ins: The designers guide to project management

I haven’t focused on newsletter growth very much this month. Instead, I’ve been more focused on making sure I’m growing a list of the right people. There was a moment not too long ago when I was so focused on growing my list that I failed to pay attention to exactly who was joining it. Are they my ideal client or customer? If not, then why did I want them on my list?

Since adding a content upgrade to my most popular post ever, I’ve seen a big increase in daily subscribers, but I’m now monitoring exactly who is opting in to that upgrade. Some of the people who have joined have purely been out to get the freebie, and some of them haven’t been my ideal customer at all. I’m adding a field to the opt-in form that asks what their occupation is so that I can see exactly what type of business they run. If most of the people who opt-in are my target market, I’ll keep the opt-in. If not, I’ll get rid of it. I don’t want a list of people who aren’t really interested in what I teach. I want an email list that is authentic and engaged!

(If you want to learn how to add custom form fields to your Convertkit opt-in boxes, there’s a great tutorial here.)

Behind the scenes this month:

I’ve been experimenting with more affiliate marketing. Honestly, this is something I’m really interested in growing. I’m only an affiliate for companies I trust and actually use, like Convertkit and Freshbooks, but that means I’m not an affiliate for very many companies.

I’ve been going through the products I love using and seeing if they have affiliate programs. There are way too many creatives out there who don’t know which tools are best for their business, so I want to start spreading the word more about online tools I’ve tried and loved.

I hopped on a Skype call with Convertkit to talk about the prospect of hosting a webinar with them. If it goes well and my community really benefits from it, I’d love to do something similar with other companies I love.

October goals:

Finalize all my business preparation for my move to Nicaragua. You wouldn’t believe how much preparation has gone into making sure my business is ready for my move. Scheduling SO much content ahead of time has been waaaaay harder than I thought, but it’s coming to an end now.

Host some awesome webinars. While I’m away in Nicaragua, I’m not sure I’m going to have chance to host webinars. :( That’s why I’m going to try and steal every chance I can to teach webinars in October, even if they’re pitch-free and I don’t get anything from it. I’ve realized that I looooooove hosting webinars, and my 2017 goal is to do a lot more of them. There may be a weekly webinar series on the way! ;)

Current obsessions:

Making Sense of Cents.  I’m really digging this blog lately. The blogger has a course on affiliate marketing that I’ve heard a lot of good things about, so it may be something I’ll invest in next year!

How to prepare your business for emergencies.  Before deciding to live in Central America for 3 months, I had never thought of what would happen to my business if something bad happened to me. It sounds morbid, but it’s important. I used Erin’s blog post (and incredible freebie!) to create a Google Doc that outlines my emergency procedures, and I sent it to my parents. If anything bad every happens, the doc will tell them what to tell my customers and clients etc. Take a look at Erin’s post and create your own emergency doc! It’s well worth it.

Disclaimer/Truth: I do earn a commission if you purchase any of the products with an * next to them. There are obviously other products available like these, but these are products I love and they are my recommendations based on my own experience. If you do purchase through my affiliate link, thanks so much for your support!
